I look forward to your questions and comments and in hearing from you about your experiences with my educational material.

Here's what’s going on and coming up:

On January 29 and 30, I presented at the Illinois Music Educator Association State Conference. I taught a workshop on Brain Bop and one called Ice Breakers and Friend Makers on Step On the Beat and AlphaBeat.

If you didn't get the Brain Bop handout, check out the basic pdf on the Brain Bop page, or download the Ice Breakers and Friend Makers handout here.

AlphaBeat is new again! The reprint just came out and it looks great. It's a digipak (soft container) this time and the guide is a downloadable pdf. Download a separate document of Target Concepts, Learning Objectives and prompts for reflection questions here. Thank you Cissy Whipp for your additional ideas for target concepts!

"The More We Are Together," Track #2 on AlphaBeat, is a nice dance for teaching the concept of Form (ABA). You can download a document here that gives simple and easy instruction for doing just that.

Activate! Magazine invited me to become a contributor to their bimonthly periodical designed for music teachers. The October, 2009 issue featured my lesson for intermediate elementary students on Native American poetry and dance. To see an instructional video of the lesson plan, click here to link to the Activate Facebook site.

For the December/January issue, my Snowflake Dance and Action Dance from AlphaBeat were featured with training videos on the Activate Facebook site.

The February/March issue includes my lesson called "Alphabet Actions." It's really fun to be a regular for this terrific magazine.

Register for Spring 2010 Creative Dance Classes
The 14-week spring session begins Saturday, Janu. 23 and run through May 8. There is a 7-week option too! 4-5 year olds meet from 9:00-9:45 a.m.; 6-7 and 8-10 from 10-11 a.m. TO JOIN OUR SPRING SESSIONS, contact the UIUC Department of Dance for registration materials and more information.

Attend a lecture on "Viewing Dance"
Local community members over 50 can sign up for my lecture series through the Osher Life Long Learning Institute. These lectures give valuable insight into the processes and aesthetics of the choreographers in the UIUC Department of Dance, from BFA candidates through faculty and guest alumni. Each lecture corresponds to one of four departmental concerts presented annually. For info about the OLLI series, contact Kathleen Holden.

PD and Dance: Beginning in November, 2009 I started leading a monthly dance class with cohort Marianne Jarvi for people with Parkinson's disease at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Classes are held one Friday morning each month and include LIVE piano accompaniment (a rare treat for me!)

Marianne and I spent a week in Berkeley, CA in early June getting advanced training in this work with members of the Mark Morris Dance Group. Exciting stuff, and so much fun to share! Thanks to the Krannert Center for making this possible.

Step On the Beat will bepublished by Heritage Press in late 2010. The new, improved version will include an instructional DVD, booklet and CD. I'll be doing a local kick-off at the Urbana Free Library on December 4th, 2010.

If you are thinking about inviting me to come and conduct a short tem residency in your community please get in touch so we can plan ahead together. I can help you shape your thoughts and find funding.

School-based short term projects can be funded through Illinois Arts Council Quickstart grants which match dollar for dollar up to $2,000. Community-based projects can take advantage of the IAC STAR (Short Term Artist Residency) grant.

For long term projects in-state through theIllinois Arts Council's Arts-in-Education program, the grant deadline has passed. But we can talk about 2010-11 any time! For a copy of the guidelines and grants visit the Illinois Arts Council.

For more good reasons for why the arts are important in education, check out a survey conducted with Ford Foundation support at the Keep Arts In Schools website.

For Teachers… CHECK OUT MY BRAIN BOP WORKSHOPS! This workshop is VERY POPULAR. I have conducted sessions as short as 45 minutes and as long as 5 hours on this topic, for classroom teachers and providers who work with parents and children. The information is versatile, fun and important.

In other news....

As of 2006/7, I can be booked through the Kennedy Center's Partners in Education program, for early childhood - middle school teachers.

For Schools...
As a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Illinois, I direct a class called “Lecture/Demonstration” in which dance majors construct a program to tour to the schools. This year's program, What is Post Modern Dance? will tour all the Urbana elemntary schools, thanks to a generous grant from the City of Urbana. Contact me if you'd like to be notified about this program.

For Community...
I am currently booking local, regional and national workshops solo and with Rocky. Programs can be custom designed to meet the needs of health care facilities, park districts, libraries, museums, family and faith based organizations, and corporate clients, to name a few.
